Children, Stolen and Gone

As the New Morality advances, many of our kids have become casualties of the cultural war. Some of these casualties are obvious, like when we lose our children to acts of direct violence. Other casualties are less obvious. We see them when our children are drawn away from the church and from traditional values associated with strong Christian backgrounds and church upbringings. In this chapter, we discuss both the overt and the subtle ways children are targeted. We address gun violence, pornography both inside and outside the church, and what appears to be an effort to normalize pedophilia.

We see the direct casualties all too often on the evening news. We all remember when twelve teenagers and an adult were gunned down by two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, on April 20, 1999. It was a horrifying day in our nation’s history. And it is a day that we seem to be reliving over and over. Twenty children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, by a young man who killed his mother before the massacre. On October 1, 2015, eight young adults and a teacher were gunned down at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. At Umpqua, the gunman lined up students and inquired about their faith. Students who hesitated at the gunman’s question or refused to answer he wounded, and those who confessed to being Christians he shot dead.

In each of these cases, the killers committed suicide. Although many voices nationwide were quick to blame guns and call for greater gun control, in most of these tragedies, when medical records have been opened, the killers either were using or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs.1 In the case of Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter, no drugs were reported in his system. But he was documented to have been suffering from untreated mental illness during the years he was being raised by a mother who purchased weapons for him and accompanied him to gun ranges.2 She became his first victim.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the overmedication of our children is a serious problem in America. It is one that we believe makes them even more susceptible to committing acts of violence. According to the CDC, “As many as ten thousand toddlers may be receiving psychostimulant medication, like methylphenidate (Ritalin).”3 Impoverished children on Medicaid are far more likely to be prescribed medication by the doctors who treat them. The percentage of children prescribed drugs has been increasing at a rather alarming rate. The CDC reported a “five-fold increase in the number of children under eighteen on psychostimulants from 1988–1994 to 2007–2010, with the most recent rate of 4.2 percent.”4 Similarly, the National Center for Health Statistics reports that “7.
